PERSONALITY
Sato is a charismatic old man. He appears genuine, but is deceptive. One cannot predict what Sato thinks as he tends to behave chaotically. While given his inability to die as an Ajin, Sato seeks thrills and kills. He is manipulative in nature. In short, even though Sato may be charming or playful, tread carefully.
BACKGROUND
FAMILY
In the manga, we only see two of Sato's relatives: his father and uncle. His father would punish young Samuel's disregard for life. Yet, the father appears remorseful after hitting his son. With a wicked smile, we can see that Samuel would manipulate his father's emotions. After being discharged from the American Marine Corps. Samuel is approached by his uncle. The man runs an illicit business and seeks to bring his nephew into the trade. Initially, Samuel refuses and continues to play his GameBoy. One of the uncle's cronies notices where the young man's attention is planted. He tells Samuel that they are going to the country that makes the top of the line games: Japan. With his interest piqued, Samuel accepts his uncle's offer.
His given name when born is actually Samuel T. Owen.
As a child, Samuel was seen ruthlessly killing numerous animals in cold blood for entertainment in a barn, much to his father's fear. While his father scolds Samuel and loves him deeply, Samuel himself seems indifferent and incapable of understanding his emotions.
Satō was part of the United States Marine Corps in the past. Nicknamed "Poker-face," he began his 8-week recruit training in San Diego in 1969 by faking his age to join the corps. After the first 2 weeks, he left because of a supposed serious illness. This was, however, a cover, as he was actually recruited to be part of an ultra-elite section of the military known only as the "team" while fighting in Vietnam.
In 1976, after the end of the war, Satō and the "team," as well as a nameless man being questioned by Tosaki in present time, are assigned to a secret recovery mission in Vietnam. With Satō in the lead, the group had managed to perfectly execute the mission in 2 days without firing a single shot, but just as the team was to return to the extraction point, "the devil woke up," as Satō fired a shot, catching the attention of hundreds of enemies, forcing the men into a battle, resulting in one member dead, one heavily injured, and Satō himself without a leg. After his return, he was dishonorably discharged.
After he was discharged he spent most of his time playing arcade games until he was recruited by his uncle and went to Japan. Sometime later his uncle was killed by his rivals. Satō went on to make a lot of enemies in the underworld and was executed however he immediately revived discovering he was an Ajin. (Ajin WIKI)
ABILITIES
BREZ: BATTLE RESURRECTION
With being an Ajin, Sato is immortal. He is unable to die from anything.
RESPAWN
In order to heal from having limbs removed or being incapacitated by poison, an Ajin simply needs to die. Sato is not afraid of pain or death. He is eager to kill himself if it provides him a healthy body to continue the fight.
AI: IBM
As true with many Ajin, Sato is capable of summoning an IBM. Essentially, he conjures a form made of Invisible Black Matter. During the course of the manga, Sato learns how to elevate his IBM. Untrained Ajin are unable to summon a cooperative IBM. Additionally, there is a limit to how many times an IBM can be summoned. As for Sato, he can conjure one about three times a day. He even learns how to summon more than one at a time. Thanks to Kei Nagai, the old soldier observes new tricks to train his IBM. While taking his IBM "off its leash," Sato accomplishes something entirely unheard of: creating an IBM with a seemingly higher sentience. (One may argue that Sato's IBM is solely reflecting his own military expertise and strong will, but I surmise that the being has become more alive).
MISC
🌕Sato is most likely what researchers call a "Variant Ajin." Generally, most Ajin do not have the amount of control of black matter as Sato does. 🌕 Sato's attention in a mission wavers with boredom. For instance, when Sato and his group take down several individuals on his hitlist, the old man gradually loses interest. When Tanaka (Sato's first-hand Ajin) remarks that they are succeeding in their goal, the other shows regret for not cutting the list down. Seeing that the individuals on the list experimented on Ajin, Tanaka is shocked from his leader's answer: "You can take care of it yourself." 🌕 Should Sato have not accepted his uncle's offer to go to Japan, then there's a chance that he would not have been killed. Thus, he may not have known about his Ajin identity and decided to terrorize
Relationships
IBMThe relationship between an Ajin and their IBM depends on how willing the first is to manipulate the other. IBMs tend to reflect their Ajin's thoughts and emotions. Additionally, they are capable of repeating thoughts which hang deep on an Ajin's mind. Essentially one's secrets or states of denial may be revealed! At least, humans cannot see IBMs, therefore one's inner thoughts are safer. Koji Tanaka The first Ajin that Samuel, now known as Sato, saves has been caught by the Japanese government. While being held captive, Tanaka has been experimented upon. Researchers would use inhumane means of understanding more about the "monsters" that they fear; from smashing Tanaka to death by a steel press to mutilating his body just to discern how much pain an Ajin can tolerate. Sato is able to apprehend the scientists and their security guards. Once he saves Tanaka, Sato aims to train his fellow Ajin in order to stand against the humans. Tanaka is indebted to Sato and looks up to him as a savior. Yet, as time progresses and more people die, Tanaka realizes that Sato never cared about an Ajin Revolution. The old man just sought the thrill of combat. Sato understands that Tanaka is no longer a part of his team once the other fails to kill one of their initial targets. Rather than continue to hold onto hate, Tanaka decides not to kill the woman who was ordered to oversee his experimentations. When a meeting is planned between Sato's team and humans of the defense committee, bonds are broken. Tanaka is betrayed as the others abandon him to carry out Sato's next plan of action. Ultimately, he is captured again by the humans. This time, Sato is not one to save the Ajin. Kei Nagai Upon seeing the newly discovered Ajin, Sato has taken an interest in procuring a new comrade for his team. With their initial meeting, Nagai is unaware of the manipulative personality of his new acquaintance. Sato sets the young Ajin up for capture. He knew that should Nagai fall into enemy hands, then they would conduct experiments on the teenager. Through the torment, Nagai would develop a deep seated hatred for the humans that disturbed his life. For some time, Nagai would side with Sato in the hopes of bettering his own position in life as an Ajin. Sato preaches about an Ajin Revolution that would benefit all of the demi-humans who have been forced into hiding. In reality, Nagai would come to learn that the old man has no interest in actually obtaining equal rights for the Ajin. Rage fuels Kei Nagai, but at the same notion, he is stuck between doing nothing and fighting against Sato. When the two fight for the first time, Sato finds something special in Nagai. After all, Nagai was the first true Ajin to initiate combat with the well trained soldier. During the course of their "war," Nagai is able to predict some of Sato's movements. On the other hand, whenever Sato adapts to battle and learns new elements of his Ajin abilities, the young adversary is at a loss. Nagai feels devastated, but determined to stop Sato from continuing to treat life as a game. Nagai may come off as a cold person, but he has more consideration for others than the sociopathic Sato. In the end, the two are pinned against one another for their final fight. Sato expresses that he has enjoyed their time together in regards to comradery and opposition. Unnamed UncleA character does not always need to be named in order to have an impact on another. After being discharged from the Marine Corps, Sato is asked to live with his Uncle. The ex soldier has no initial interest in his Uncle's offer. Yet, once he hears that they are bound to the country responsible for the best video games, matters change. Sato agrees to go to Japan and learn more of his Uncle's trade. Should Sato have not agreed to stay with his Uncle, then he may have not have known about being an Ajin. Furthermore, Sato would not have had the illicit connections to trade organs, guns, ammo and various other tactical technologies capable of conducting the attacks on humans.

Character Base

• Character Name: Sato (Birth name: Samuel T. Owen) • Age: Appx. 60 • Canon (Release Date) Canon Point: Volume 17 (12/2021) • Items Coming Along: His hat, a machete, a revolver, switchblade, a psp vita, and his IBM Content Warnings for Character: Self mutilation, suicide, violence and gore

Character Background

• History: During childhood, Samuel shows signs of a sociopathic mentality. Samuel would kill animals to the horror of his father. His father would beat him as punishment, but would find instant remorse. While noting his father's love, Samuel would manipulate him even at a young age. In his teenage years, Samuel enlists himself in the American Marine Corps. The young recruit lies about his age but has the wit to excel in his training. Within two weeks, Samuel "leaves" the corps on account of a serious illness. In reality, Samuel has been enlisted in a special elite force known as "the team" while fighting in the Vietnam War. Once the war ends, Samuel is called to carry out a mission to assist a POW. Although the mission seems to be a success, the young soldier incites a battle with a single shot fired. Samuel's violent nature is displayed as he seeks the thrill of combat with enemy forces. His actions lead to the loss of a team member, the injury of another and the loss of his own leg. Due to his aggressiveness and troublesome behavior, Samuel is discharged from the Corps. Afterwards, Samuel moves to Japan with his lucrative uncle who upholds a stake in the black market. At first, Samuel does not want to leave America. One of his uncle's cronies notice that Samuel's attention is more on a Gameboy than the conversation. The crony suggests that they are going to the land that created all of the popular games: Japan. Samuel's interest alters and accepts the request to join his uncle. One day, a deal goes south and gang men stampede the uncle's hideout. Despite the loss of his leg, Samuel engages in combat. Although he could not save his uncle- not that he really cared for him anyways- Samuel manages to kill the intruders. Eventually, he is captured by the opposing gang. He is shot in the head. To Samuel's surprise: it isn't game over. While relishing his new life, Samuel is able to defeat his foes and learn more about what it means to be an Ajin. • Core Relationships: Koji Tanaka: The first Ajin that Samuel, now known as Sato, saves has been caught by the Japanese government. Kei Nagai: Upon seeing the newly discovered Ajin, Sato has taken an interest in procuring a new comrade for his team. Unnamed Uncle: A character does not always need to be named in order to have an impact on another.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences/Traits: Hardcore Strategist: Given Sato's experience on the battle field, he is a great strategist. Given that Sato is able to regenerate after killing himself- losing limbs does not phase him. During his mission at Forge Security, Sato's opponent is able to subdue his comrades. Kei Nagai uses the building's massive ventilation unit to spread dark matter particles towards the room where a few of Sato's group stand in combat. Humans cannot see dark matter. However, knowing that Ajin can see dark matter, Nagai creates a veil blinding the intruders. Once his comrades have been subdued, Sato plans to save them from enemy hands. While using explosives, Sato damages the fan. Additionally, he uses his IBM to destroy the building's electrical unit. While aiming for the Forge Security president, Sato must create a strategy in order to break through a seemingly indestructible room. The old Ajin cuts off his hand and throws the limb far away. Sato then places his severed limb against the wall. As the new hand regenerates, the dark matter makes a perfect hole in the wall. Sato is pleased with this discovery of his Ajin abilities as he is able to take out his quarry. An A Game Actor: In order to infiltrate the JASDF's Iruma Base, Sato utilizes a disguise. He presents himself as a cameraman simply on base in order to photograph the annual festival event. He is apprehended by several soldiers. One of the generals is certain that he is the mad Ajin that has been terrorizing Japan. On the other hand, another soldier- close in rank to the former- does not want to risk upsetting a civilian. The doubtful soldier insists that they investigate matters further. While under restraints, Sato acts his part. He provides a sad story of how he has lost his job die to looking like the infamous Ajin. While placate to the soldier's emotions, Sato is able to convince more of the soldier. Although the initial general still does not believe him- another act serves to bring more confusion. Sato plays his cameraman role while he has his IBM portray himself. Outside, soldier's see an armed Sato! The IBM is dressed in Sato's clothing and has his severed head to finalize the disguise. Indeed, the plan works and Sato is released from the restraints. (2+) Negative Experiences/Traits: Manipulative and Deceptive: There are numerous instances where Sato has used another's beliefs and emotions against them. He preaches the idea of an Ajin Revolution in which the atrocities of experimentation would be exploited. Sato initially wins the appeal of young Ajin like Kei Nagai and Ko Nakano. On the other hand, once they discover how violent Sato is- Nagai and Nakano understand that the old Ajin is acting with his own interest. Sato further spreads propaganda on an illegal website. He appeals to extremists and those who are tired of being discriminated against by the humans. Additionally, Sato's extreme acts of violence draw in followers who wish to commit themselves with furthering his declaration of war against humankind. True, Sato is a sociopath - as evident in the above information- who will use emotions to test how far people can be pushed. Unfortunately, Nagai and even his longest running comrade Tanaka separate themselves from the madman. Manipulation and deception can only work when the other individual still believes in the oppressor. Once Sato betrays Tanaka, he no longer has his support. Though does Sato care about losing comrades? Absolutely not. Boredom creates Compululsive Tendencies: What makes Sato dangerous is that he plays with life as a game. The Ajin cannot die, therefore he is willing to injure himself at the sake of killing his opponents. However, there are times when boredom lowers Sato's interest to complete his missions. For instance, he sets a list of several targets who had played a role in experimenting on Ajin. As the numbers on the list dwindle down seemingly with no effort, Sato begins to reconsider his game. Tanaka shares the news with his leader. Yet, he finds Sato playing a video game alone in his room. The old Ajin shrugs his shoulders and remarks how he should have placed only three on the list. Tanaka is unnerved by the response and a lack of desire to follow through with a sense of Ajin justice. Regardless of Tanaka's disappointment, Sato tells him to carry out with the rest by himself.
